Most Common Plumbing Mistakes DIYers Make
Most homeowners can fix their own household plumbing repair issues, and even update their plumbing fixtures using a few special tools and some elbow grease. The work is not physically challenging, however, you do need to know the differences between the different types of pipes, glue, fittings, and solder because that is one big area where DIYers frequently mess up. In addition to not using the right components and parts, DIYers often make these other common mistakes.
Wrapping Thread Tape Backwards or Even Using the Wrong Tape
PTFE thread tape, often known as Teflon tape has to be wrapped clockwise around threads in order for it to work properly. However, most DIYers wrap it backward so that the tape will actually unwind from the threads as they begin to tighten the fitting. This completely defeats the entire purpose of using thread tape, as it can’t seal if it is not embedded deep in the threads.
Here is a pro-tip when it comes to the right way for wrapping: Wrap 3 times around the threads with the last wrap facing the left as you start to screw the pipe to the fitting. If that last wrap is facing to the right, stop and re-wrap it.
Doing a Plumbing Job Without Having The Right Parts
DIYers frequently make the mistake of purchasing a cartridge or washer when performing faucet repair. However, if the washer or cartridge is worn, that chances are other parts will be worn out too. If you don’t replace the gasket, stem seal, and O-rings when replacing the washer or cartridge, you will still have a leaky faucet. That means another trip to the hardware store and another faucet disassembly/reassembly job.
